Barrow in Furness: Devonshire Dock. 47490 shunts Barrow docks on 23 January 1986 (see also next caption). Although Barrow continued to build surface ships until 2003, submarines became its raison d’ȇtre and a huge covered dry dock was built at the Devonshire Dock. Known as Devonshire Dock Hall, it is seen under construction in January 1986. The trackwork here, the remains of an extensive rail network was in its final throes, the centre track here served Holme’s coal yard which was still receiving single wagon loads of coal at this time but this was its final year of operation. The line on the right served Ward’s scrapyard until 1989 but the whole lot had gone by 1990.
